OVERVIEW
In Luke 4:18–19, Jesus declared His Kingdom mission: to proclaim good news to the poor, release to the captives, recovery of sight to the blind, and freedom for the oppressed. Now in Luke 4:31–37, Jesus begins to demonstrate that He has the authority and power to accomplish what He declared.
The people are amazed because Jesus teaches with authority (exousia)…the right to command. When an unclean spirit confronts Him, Jesus demonstrates power (dynamis)…the ability to accomplish what He commands. At the word of Jesus, the demon must obey and the captive is set free.
Spiritual bondage is not always obvious, and being around spiritual things does not necessarily mean we recognize every area where the enemy may be influencing our thinking or behavior. Let’s invite the Holy Spirit to reveal what we cannot see and trust in Christ’s authority and power to bring freedom.
