*MESSAGE THEME: Doing what Jesus did includes living known, in authority, and in your calling!
*INTRODUCTION
- Picture the town of Capernaum late on a Sabbath afternoon.
- The synagogue service that morning was one nobody will forget.
- A visiting preacher, from the neighboring town Nazareth, named Jesus, taught like He owned the Scriptures.
- And when a demoniac stood up screaming in the middle of the service, Jesus authoritatively shut down the demon and threw him out.
- The whole town was talking about it.
- However, word is also spreading of something else: in Simon’s house, the grandmother of the family is lying in bed burning up with a great fever.
- And the doctor can’t help her; there is no help.
- As the sun slides toward the hills, the whole town watches the sky.
- The moment the sun sets, the Sabbath is over, the doors of houses fly open, and people flock carrying their sick to one door: where Jesus is staying that afternoon, at Peter’s.
- Now, we may not live in first-century Galilee, but we can imagine.
- Jesus had already preached, already fought a demon,
- He then walks into a house of sickness, and heals.
- And then, at the end of the day, He is pressed by an entire town with their sick and demonized.
- He heals all who came, one at a time.
- Luke’s objective is to paint a picture of who Jesus is:
- The Son of God, the Messiah, with authority over all sickness and every demon.
